Briefing March 17

Hi historians of East Asia!
I’m sure you have heard by now that the situation with Covid19 keeps developing rapidly, and that it is a Good Thing we are currently not on campus anymore. Faculty and most staff will be working from home for the foreseeable future.

I fortunately have good company: William, the plucky hippo who doubles as the unofficial mascot of the History Department, has come home with me.

William meets Fiona. I don’t have a particular thing for hippos but these two are special!

Later today (Tue.) I will update the websites and alert you via email. You will not be looking at new materials, we will go over the remains of Week 8. Current schedule looks like this for each course:

HST259: Korean history: Discussion board on Canvas to try out, Tue-Thu. Zoom on Wednesday (March 18) to check in. You don’t have to stay on the call for long, but I want to make sure you’re set up to Zoom for Friday (March 20), when we will discuss adjustments to the course and go over the material from the discussion board. We will Zoom at 11.30. Both meetings are recorded and will be posted on Canvas. (Links will be provided from the Course Schedule page)

HST267: Traditional Japan: Discussion board on Canvas try out on Tue-Wed. Zoom on Thursday (March 19) at 1pm to check in and discuss adjustments to the course and talk about the discussion board materials; meeting will be recorded and posted on Canvas. (Links will be provided from the Course Schedule page)

HST107: China’s Magical Creatures: Discussion board on Canvas try out on Tue-Wed. Zoom on Thursday (March 19) at 4pm (not 1pm as I first put) to check in and discuss adjustments to the course and talk about the discussion board materials; meeting will be recorded and posted on Canvas. (Links will be provided from the Course Schedule page)

Note that I schedule Zoom to start 30 mins later than our regular class time, to accommodate for students in different time zones. I don’t anticipate being on Zoom for more than 40/45 mins so we still are within our regular class time. Next week’s schedule may be a bit different: I don’t know yet if we need to meet as a group twice every week.

I’ll see where I can fit in drop-in tutorials this week. Remember there is the chat option in Slack or groupme, depending on the class’s selection for group communication, and you can ask questions there (and maybe answer some!)

I hope you’re all well, and perhaps just a bit bored: because that would mean you and the people you care about are ok. We’ll get through this!
